Colorado Rockies vs Los Angeles Dodgers Analysis
The Los Angeles Dodgers travel to Coors Field to face the Colorado Rockies in the first of a four-game series. Big Blue is 5-2 after the All-Star break, sweeping four of the Giants and dropping two to Washington at home.
The Rockies split two games with the White Sox at home and lost three of four to the Brewers in Milwaukee. Lefty Tyler Anderson takes the mound against righty Jose Urena, first pitch is scheduled for 8:40 PM EDT / 5:40 PM PDT.
Anderson is looking for another win
Tyler Anderson and Tony Gonsolin have been two of the Dodgers’ best starting pitchers in 2022. Anderson has a 10-1 record with a 2.79 ERA, an outstanding 1.02 WHIP and 87 strikeouts in 16 starts and 103 innings. His control has been excellent and he hasn’t made many mistakes, allowing just nine long flies and 19 walks so far.
Anderson has had two starts in Colorado this season, the first being a 4.0 inning outing in April where he gave up two hits and one earned run. The last was on June 27 where he went 6.0 innings and gave up 10 hits and four earned runs.
The Dodgers have hit right-handed pitching very well this season, as they have the second-best OPS against lefties at .777 with 89 homers and a fourth-best team average of .256. They should be able to tweak Jose Urena for at least a few runs on Thursday night.
Urena has to hold it together
Jose Urena is a recent addition to the Rockies rotation, and the veteran right-hander had some success in his first three starts. However, he struggled in his last start on July 23 at Milwaukee, giving up six hits and five earned runs in 5.1 innings of work.
In a combined eight games, four starts and 31.2 innings with the Brewers and Rockies, he has a 3.13 ERA with 17 strikeouts and a 1.42 WHIP.
CJ Cron is the team’s MVP this season and earned a well-deserved spot on the NL All-Star team. The Rox first baseman is hitting .286 with 22 home runs, 71 RBI and an .872 OPS.
Cron and Charlie Blackmon are the top home run hitters for the Rockies as Chuck Nasty has 15 long flies. No other Rocky has more than nine, and the team is in the bottom 10 in team home runs, tied for 21st with the Reds at 92.
Colorado Rockies vs Los Angeles Dodgers Prediction
The Rockies are playing better baseball at home with a 29-23 record, and have won four of six over the Dodgers at Coors Field this season. Big Blue has the best starting pitcher, best bullpen and lineup, but given Colorado’s success at home against them this year, it’s hard to take LA in the run line.
Even the Rox bullpen has been held at home most of the time against their division rival. And the books have a total of 12, which is about right and hard to find an advantage or much value here.
Given the Dodgers’ success with right-handed pitching and facing a righty up the middle in Urena, I like them to put up hits and runs in this game early and often. That’s why my best bet for this game is THE 1st 5 innings on total runs scored by the team.
Prediction: Dodgers 1st in 5 innings on team total runs scored (3.5)
